Gainsborough woman sentenced for cancer fraud

A Gainsborough woman conned her employer out of nearly £15,000 after shaving her head to claim she had terminal cancer.

38 year old Kelsey Whitehead from Lea Road was lent the money after she said the NHS wouldn't fund her treatment.

She put a fake drip on her chest and used make up to give the impression she wasn't sleeping at night.

Her own partner believed the lies and gave up work thinking she didn't have long to live.

The hoax only came to light last May when she overdosed and was taken to hospital.

Whitehead admitted 2 charges of fraud and was given a 1 year jail sentence - suspended for a year yesterday, with a 20 week night time curfew and rehabilitation support.
