Band Aid 30 - Do They Know It's Christmas

The first charity Band Aid single was in 1984 raising money for the people in Ethiopia who were struggling to survive a famine. The original ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ spent 5 weeks at Number 1 and has sold 3.7m copies. Band Aid 2 came in 1989 holding on to the top spot for 3 weeks. The 3rd version came in 2004 when Band Aid 20 scored 4 consecutive weeks at Number 1. The 4th version comes 30 years after the first and this time raises money for the Ebola crisis in West Africa which has led to over 5,000 deaths up to the start of November. Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure who came up with the original Band Aid idea helped re-write some of the lyrics. Bono’s U2 appears on a Band Aid song for the 3rd time, joined by Chris Martin, One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith and Emeli Sande.
